Homework #6

Homework due October 29th

For this weeks HW. Your focus will be on reading through your novel
The Once and Future King

You should be at least 1/2 way through with the book. If you are not, your goal for this week should be to read to the end of book 2.
Book 2 is a fairly short section. Do your best to stay on track with what you are reading.
Try to take note of what  is occurring within the Plot, setting and Character as you are reading. This will help you to implement the skill of analyzing literature as you read. If you see anything of importance or note any literary devices... Try marking them with pencil in your margins so tha you can refer back to them later on.

When Reading your book, you should be seeking the little nuggets within that are helping to form your opinion of the book. It should almost seem as if you are on a treasure hunt, with each little "clue" bringing you closer to the treasure at the end of the book ( Theme).

Please define the following terms in your own words for this week.
You will need an original example or an example from a book/ poem.

Homework #5 due October 22nd

We had a great discussion on Thursday. We are covering the material at a very fast pace. Please remember that the main purpose of this class is to get you to think as an individual. At this point there are NO wrong answers... It is all merely based on perspective.  So open your mind... Think.... Explore... And have fun challenging yourself with the myriad of possibilities that lie within your text.

Homework

Homework for this week will have you thinking a little deeper.

  • Please review your setting from last week. Look for any dual meanings or symbolism or imagery within your setting. How does it affect  the mood of the reader? Take time to consider what we discussed in class and have fun exploring the nuances of setting.
  • Now look at the characters within your text.  Does the setting affect or reflect character emotions. Does it add intensity to the character? Take note of who your protagonist/ antagonist are. who is the foil?  Is there emotional development within your character? Is their external development within your character.? What literary devices are employed to help you take note of these developments? Is this a static character? Or a dynamic character? Does the reader connect to the character? In what way? Character can be  described both directly and indirectly. Please take note of the different ways in which the character is expressed by the author.

  • Please fill out your story chart on Tom Sawyer. Include your character list. Make note of your impression of the characters. We will go over the character questions in class on Thursday
  • If you did not define the vocab words in homework #4, please do so in your own words!  You will also need to provide an example of these devices. This can be an original example or an example from a piece of literature. A quiz will be upcoming on this material. Please be prepared!
  • we will have a a box labeled " Highschool literature" on the kitchen counter as you enter the building on Thursday. Please place your vocab definitions, story chart, setting and character analysis in this box. As assignments get more complex, we will need to read through them in order to assess your understanding of the material. If you forget to turn in your homework prior to class you will not get full credit for your work. If you neglect to complete the assignment, you will get NO credit.  It is imperative that you stay on track with these assignments in order to ensure that you are prepared for in class discussion. If you are having trouble with your assignments please contact us and we will help you.  When it comes to Literary analysis there are NO wrong answers.... Just do your best in assessing the character and setting. In class discussion will help you to establish whether your thoughts and ideas are substantiated.

See you in class on Thursday!!!!!

Homework Assignment #3

Great discussion today as we broke open and explored our summer novel The Silver Chalice!
If you missed out on class today we went over the remaining literary terms from Pages 10-11. We discussed the 5 different conflicts and picked a couple different ones for The Silver Chalice and made a story chart of each.  Again loved the class participation and input!  Remember class participation is a big part of your grade so be sure you are getting involved in the discussion! Literary interpretation occurs when different opinions arise. Continue making informed decisions and have the reasons/support to back up your decision.  This is CRITICAL THINKING!!!
